Initially, I was baking only for my near and dear ones, but our friends and family encouraged us to start this as a business, we started it with full of positive vibes hopefully we are doing a decent work now. And with all blessings we have kept a successful second step EVENTS and our first event was a huge success.

We initially started up only with Customized Cupcakes & chocolates if we work for 3 hours per day you can earn up to Rs.4000 per day.  Monthly we work for 10 days & you can make up to 40k and there is no way of lagging in business because every day is someone's special day to be celebrated with a cake so only chance is if your taste is lagging your business will lag.

The biggest turning point happened after 5 months from the date we started our business, Mrs. Manju Roa 's Daughter birthday was celeberated at GRT hotels, T.Nagar. Our second grand event was at ITC Grand Chola for Mrs.Kaushika Arjun Son's and the grand dessert table which was arranged by me was a super hit. She was the one who said, "You baked our dreams dear" and still now it is our unforgettable review.

Meet Prianka, owner of Uniquely Expressive

We have Prianka Sadagopan with us this time, a person who is successful in her own business besides working in an IT firm. She is a proof that nothing can be a hurdle when doing a business with passion. She manages her business efficiently along with her IT Profession. A big kudos to her! Now, join me in reading her story. Read on.

Tell us a little about you:

I am Prianka, based out of Chennai. I’ve studied and I’ve been in Chennai almost all my life till date.

I am a software engineer by profession in the field of Data Warehousing and analytics. I continue my passion in crafting and painting along with my profession in the IT sector.

I finished my schooling in Holy Angels; my school had a focus in Art and Painting up to class 8 and that could have been the reason towards my inclination towards crafting.

My keen interest in different art mediums of painting like “Oil on canvas”, “Charcoal or Pencil sketching”, “Acrylic Mediums” etc., dates back to the end of my college life in 2007 – 2008.

I run the page with the name –“Uniquely Expressive” for all my handmade crafts.

I am also an artist who participates in group shows/exhibitions to display different mediums of my paintings. I paint various themes based on inspirations drawn from people/ places around me and also inspirations from the mythical world.

Tell us about your business:

Facebook URL -

I started this page, mid 2014 between July – Aug 2014. I focus on Personalized/Custom gifting, Home decor and accessories.

This is a passion turned business like many others.

Accessories: Initially started with Jhumkas, clay earrings, rings, bracelets, etc

Personalized gifting: Key chains, magnets, Mobile accessories, Message bottles, Miniatures in a bottle, Photo booth frames and props, Doodles, Thematic gifting , Scrapbooks/Albums , Explosion boxes etc.

Home Decor: Name-Boards, Lamps, Photo frames Clocks, Chest of Draws, coasters, etc.

Items that I would showcase as my personal favorite, my work which I call “Mini in a bottle” - miniatures in a bottle are all unique in design and each one is completely personalized and customized for every person who orders a piece or I can say theme specific uniqueness.

Sample on “Dad/Mom to be” concept:

Why did you choose work from home career?

I chose this secondary profession to pursue my passion. There is no replacement for the happiness and the appreciation for each gift I deliver, be it by the receiver of the gift or by the person who orders it!

How much one can earn in your business?

I don’t have a daily hourly schedule due to this being my secondary profession. But I have a minimum 10 -15 personalized order milestone I reach, based on the type of work intake I do.

1. For example Doodles – I take up 4-5 per month,
2. Name-boards up to 2 per month etc
3. Miniatures/ other accessories etc 4-5 per month along with other random orders

Recently I have streamlined by having a minimum processing time for some of the work I do.

I don’t make a consistent profit based on the random work I do. The margin varies from month to month

As far as I am concerned I don’t focus on a fixed margin or profit until I stabilize, which I plan to, by another 2 years maximum.

Pricing for handmade crafts I would say would be based on Raw materials + time associated cost  + effort associated cost + a marginal profit.

Difficult times you have faced and how did you recover from that:

1. Being handmade crafts, it is important to focus on packing, delivery and logistics within or outside the country. I learnt that I should keep the customer informed on separate charges for packing and separate for shipping or a fixed amount based on the size of the package.

2. Also since personalization involves a lot of specifications from the customer, I make sure I have all details recorded and acknowledged over an email before I start work.

3. When I get orders on replication it is difficult for me to convince the customer that it is not an ideal choice to replicate. I don’t mind losing an order instead of a piece of copy!

Top 5 lessons u have learned from this business which u want to share with everyone

1. Dedicated and punctual delivery irrespective of any personal constraints
2. Patience in complete discussion on personalized orders
3. A rough draft always helps
4. Prioritization
5. Packing time is as important as the work time

How are you balancing work and personal life?

Working in an IT sector, I have always had the balance between what life for me vs. life at work is. The same applies to this.  I’ve said NO to orders that may take up any personal time.

- Shiny Anto, founder of Fascino Tutu

Tell us a little about you:

I am Mrs. Shiny Anto settled in Coimbatore, basically from Ooty. I have done my Master
of Computed Applications. I have worked with, Chennai for 3.8 years as a
Subject Matter Expert in the QA team. Currently, working as a Corporate Training
Manager in Teknoturf, Coimbatore and a Proud Entrepreneur, a Fashion Designer – Kids
and Women apparels. I am married to a handsome and an awesome person, Mr. Anto
and we have one beautiful 3.5 years old Princess, Adriana Leanne who is in KG1.

Please tell us more about your business:

I am into Fashion Designing. I create beautiful designs for kids and Women, most of them are handmade dresses, Princess dresses, Bridesmaid Dresses, Flower Girls Dresses, Mother and Daughter Combo etc,.

I started my business in the years 2015, March. I actually purchased a dress for my kid from an online store, the design was quite interesting and I starting exploring about it a lot and learnt it myself and finally started my own. It has been 2.4 years now since I started.

Why did u choose work from home career?

I am still an IT professional working for a Corporate as well doing my business from home. I am serving my notice period, will be getting relieved by Aug end. A break from corporate career!!!!!! Getting fully into business.

How much one can earn in your business?

I started this business with 0 investments. Seeing my work, people approached me. Almost for 1.5 years, I have been working all alone on orders. When I felt I am struggling to manage all orders, I employed 2 people. They are very good in tailoring, quickly grasp what I say, I pay them well around 10-15K per month each. They are very happy! They work full time from Mon-Sat.

Tell us about your turning points  and milestones in your business:

The business itself was a turning point in my life. I got to learn so much, so much!!
Another turning point was that my business made me take a break from my corporate career which I was so passionate about!

Milestones :

1. I have gained a lot of clients who blindly trust Fascino
2. I have around 1 Lakh followers for my FB page
3. I have my review rating 4.8 out of 5 – Total reviews 227 which is very important for any online store. Whenever people question how can I trust, I simple say – check my reviews and get back if interested and all of them had come back!
4. I have solely worked on all dresses for almost 1.5 years managing my business, home, office, my Baby, AND EVERYTHING HAD BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

What are the difficult times you have to face and how did u recover?

Difficult times were very less I would say. My husband is a great support to me. Until I employed 2 people, I had to compromise at times on house work/cooking when I had more orders. My husband always helps me with the work at home. He is my Pillar!

After employing them both, I was kind of relieved from stitching where I just give them the designs and they stitch. Any new pattern/design I still do it for the first time.

I had never compromised on the time spending with my baby. Be it any work, I make sure I spend all the time with her till she is awake and I start my dress work after putting her to sleep. I had even slept for just 3-4 hrs a day!

Difficulties you face daily in working from home?

Currently I don’t face this as I also work and had to go to office every day. But working from home will definitely not be difficult because you are at your own comfort!

How r you balancing work and personal life?

Right now, balancing my business, office and personal life. The main reason behind this is my supporting and understanding husband and my baby. Firstly my husband, he is the main reason for me to reach heights. Not all husbands are happy with wife working. In my case he encourages me so much to make my dreams come true. When I tell him my new ideas, the very immediate answer he gives me is, Yes you can do! He also gives me many ideas to improve business. He helps me with all the work at home. I am proud to say that we share our work at home and that is the reason for my success.

Secondly my baby, she is just 3.5 years old and she knows that Mumma makes dresses and she is matured enough to understand me at busy times. I make her sit near me when I work giving her some task/games. Will make sure, our full attention is on her all the time. Never a time, had she given trouble to me while working. She is such a doll.   My mother in law is a big support to me. After us, she is the next person to look after her so well.

Top 5 lessons u have learned from this business which u want to share with everyone:

1. Be patient with your clients, treat Customers as KINGS! We will have both calm and fussy clients. Be it what kind they are, treat them nicely.
2. Be bold enough to face any situation, never fear for anything.
3. Give your clients what you promised.
4. Maintain your dignity. Few clients may disrespect you when they are not happy with price you quote or anything, do not feel bad. I would say, just IGNORE such kind of people. Don’t fight back.
5. Do not cheat anyone.

The journey of Renee - the owner of R^3 Iniya's World from M.E graduate to a mompreneur

Meet Renee Jebaline who is the owner of R3 Iniya's World. She shares her journey with us how she has turned to a mompreneur after doing Post Graduate in CSE. She is from Kanyakumari district and a mom of a little girl. She has earned around Rs.50,000 just by doing crochet business in her free time alone. Hope you love to read her journey.

Tell us a little about you:

I am G. Renee Jebaline from Thuckalay a small town in the district of Kanyakumari. I am a post graduate in Computer Science and Engineering. My dad is working as a Deputy Manager in CDPC in City Union Bank, while mom is busy in building our home with care and affection.  Since I got married during my PG to a PhD student I couldn’t find a job. Moreover, my kid Iniya was born on 15.10.15.  So, I was not able to go outside for a job.

Please tell us more about your business:

I learned this art of crochet from my mom who learned the art from her mom. Initially I was doing this art for personal use.

The first order I did was twenty purses using loop stitch for our family friend for gift favour. Then I stopped doing this for my schoolings. In college days I did this art for my bags. When my marriage was fixed, I came to know that his friends from Germany are coming for our great day, since my hubby was pursuing PhD there. As a surprise I did a small potli bag for them which hold quilling earrings and a crystal bracelet. They were very much surprised and they carried them on our big day in our traditional silk saree. This is how my passion has been growing up.

I started to do this as a business from Sept 2015 after landing in Germany to fight loneliness. Since my pregnancy was very hard due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum, I couldn’t do it as I expected but on the whole I earned nearly 50000 rupees.

Why did u choose work from home career?

As my husband is doing Ph.D, I opted full time mom for our beautiful daughter Iniya. To fight the loneliness, I started to do this and all sort of DIYs which I can do with our daughter at home. I opted this to spend more time with my daughter since my husband spends more time in lab(sometimes even for 24 hrs).

Showcase some of your best work:

How much one can earn in your business?

The earning depends on the time of hours spent and the art of creativity. We can at least Rs.5000 per month.

Please tell about the turning points and milestones in your business?

Even though I am a PG student and did one of the best project in my college life, a person who has high influence in our family scolded me for trimming my hair as “what did you achieve for trimming your hair?”. This is the turning point which made me to think about achieving something in my life. This happened on 5th oct 2015 and every month after that has a milestone. A few among them are starting a website and a channel in Youtube.

What are the difficulties you face daily in working from home?

I don’t face many issues as I enjoy doing this to fight loneliness. A clear plan of future helps me to overcome burdens.

Business Ideas for Women - How to choose the right home based business?

Business Ideas for Women - How to choose the right home based business?

Recent days, shopping, social Medias and fashion have a lot to do in common. An actress sports a big jhumka or a new style of dress, every lady secretly wishes that she gets her hands on that or something similar. That becomes the trend. Practically, it is not possible to find all of that in a virtual store for so many reasons. So fashion freaks resort to online shopping. Now, this is where social media comes of help.

I am writing here to share my journey of running home based online jobs with you all. I am from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I ran an online jewel business on Facebook for few months. Due to personal constraints, I am not doing it anymore. But still, I feel that I have a lot of experience to share some helpful information with the women who have some business ideas in their mind and got stuck in taking it forward.

I had crossed paths with a lot of people who were into the same business as me or others. Well, like any coin that has two sides to it, this sort of business has its own set of pros and cons. I thought I’ll share my views on it and tell you folks a little in detail about this. Been thinking of starting a business soon? Cheers! You are on the right page.

Let me tell you about the whole journey of my business ideas for women with little breaks. This is basically as series on 'Business Ideas for Women' where we share all such helpful articles to you. And this is one such article especially for you. So, here we go!

Business Ideas for Women - Commencement of Business:

Ok, so now you know you want to start your business.

Firstly, be clear of what you want to sell.

Think if you personally have an interest in them or you want to sell them because you think that’s what is doing well at resent. For example, I opted for jewel because I love trying different pieces of jewels and collecting them. Not just that, my family is into gold jewellery business already.

The trend might change, but the need for jewels would stay. Summing up all, I zeroed in at jewels.

Rake your brains hard and think from different angles before you land on something concrete.

Secondly, you ought to understand that running a business online cannot happen if money is your only criteria. There could be days when you have sold even 20 pieces and there could also be those days, where you haven’t even had an enquiry. In short, you need to be passionate about it to not lose hope.

Thirdly, please accept the fact that everything won’t fall in place in a jiffy; it takes time and is definitely not a quick fix.

Fourth, be ready to spare all your free time only for this.  Yes, it takes more time than what you are actually imagining. The more time you spend, that faster your page develops and that much money you make.

It is also important that you don’t over think. Now that, you have finalised on what you want to sell and why you want to sell, next comes execution.

In my case, there was a friend of mine who was into clothing already, I took her help to understand the process in whole and help me find dealers.

Use the power of Facebook and WhatsApp to reach dealers:

Relax; you won’t need that because that’s what this article is going to do for you. What you need to do is surfing Facebook/Google, and get to know few dealers whose collections look unique and sellable.

Mushrooms generally require a moist climate. They do not grow in hot areas as the moisture content is very low. Choose a cold region with a good moisture content.

Cultivation process:

Have a detailed knowledge about the seeds that are used for cultivation, they are generally referred as spawns. These spawns are readily available in the market. It can also be produced by the grower. These spawns are combined with various mixtures in order to give fertility to the soil. This makes the mushrooms rich in nutrients. Many organic substance are added in traditional way to make the soil live long. The mixture can be done with a ratio of equal half, or they can also follow other methods. With proper climate, proper cultivation and proper maintenance the mushroom will grow well. It usually takes 30 – 40 days for the mushroom to grow.

Mushrooms can be easily marketed as the demand is high. They can also be exported to other places. Mostly they are demanded by the chines restaurant who use mushrooms in their dishes. They can also be sold in super market by packing them properly. The packet should have moisture in it and there should be an expiry date mentioned in the package. There are many governmental organizations providing loans in order to start a business on mushroom cultivation. This business has boomed up in recent days and has created a high demand. It is better to start the business in a small level keeping in mind the above discussed criteria. Once the business has set its stand we can move to a larger scale business and take part in the export of mushrooms to various other places.

Why did u choose work from home career?

I am an Artist but a mom first. My son is my world. I never wanted to compromise with his upbringing. In today’s fast moving world, ‘Time’ is the scarcest thing. I wanted to be there for him in all the important milestones and to see him grow.

I chose to work from home so that I could strike a balance between my work and son. I like to give my 100% to any work I indulge in, Thus I work during my son’s school time, play time and when he sleeps at night.

From a teacher to work from home entrepreneur - Story of Neelima Badola

Tell us a little about you:

My name is Neelima Badola. I have done my Masters in English literature. After completing my degree of Bachelor in Education, I took up teaching as my profession. I taught all age groups, starting from K.G to M.B.A students. I’m blessed with 2 sons and had chosen teaching as my profession to be available for them afternoon. But I guess that was not my destiny. After 10 years of being a successful teacher, I decided to do something different. But it came into action only when my husband seriously suggested me to go for my passion of crafting.

self (1)

But I have been very passionate about creating new things. I love crafting. Seeing my passion, my husband wanted me to do something of my own and at my convenience to work. He always encouraged and supported me. He always motivated me by saying I should concentrate on creating and establishing first and not earning.

Tell us a little about ur part time career:

I started with my creations of craft work. I was also learning new things side by side by attending various workshops.

I created a facebook page of mine and started posting of whatever I made

I kept on learning and gifting to my near ones from handmade items like home decor items, jewelry etc, I finally started with Natural Soapmaking. When I started getting orders for soaps  I thought of learning and selling homemade organic products which gave me immense pleasure and satisfaction.

I started thinking seriously about starting my hobby as a business after learning soap making professionally in 2015.

I still remember the peak summer days when I was bored sitting idle at home doing nothing except for watching the T.V.

I saw the details on FB group of a lady who teaches how to make soaps. I was curious so contacted her and was really enthusiastic to know that it was at walking distance from my house. After learning the basics I started gifting my friends initially and slowly learned marketing my soaps.

I would proudly like to add that I only learned basics but started designing my soaps all by myself. I learned how to make creams and many other products as per skin treatments.

It is not so easy to establish yourself independently in India’s huge market. I personally feel if you aim only for being happy with your work without any expectation to earn billions, you will be successful.
